National Sovereignty in Geosciences, Statistics and DataRisks and opportunities for Brazil in the Digital Era

The National Conference of Data Producers and Users - National Sovereignty in Geosciences, Statistics and Data: risks and opportunities for Brazil in the Digital Age follows the CONFEST/CONFEGE series. The main objectives of the conference are to expand the Institute's dialogue with society and with users of data and statistics produced by the IBGE, and to evaluate the processes of production, dissemination and use of statistical and geographic information, aiming to review and improve the General Plan for Statistical and Geographic Information - PGIEG.

To its success, the Conference demands the participation of a wide range of actors made up of different bodies that produce and use information within the Federal Executive Branch, the Legislative and Judicial Branches, together with state and municipal statistical and geographic information offices, and other segments of organized civil society with an interest in the issue.

In order to carry out the activities required to fulfill this task, the IBGE held the 1st CONFEST and the 1st CONFEGE in 1968. The second edition of the two Conferences was held simultaneously in 1972. The III CONFEST took place in 1989 but CONFEGE was not held that year. The 1st National Meeting of Producers and Users of Social, Economic and Territorial Information, which celebrated the 60th anniversary of the IBGE, led to the holding of the IV CONFEST and the III CONFEGE in 1996. As one of the milestones for the celebration of its 70th anniversary, the IBGE held the 2nd National Meeting of Producers and Users of Social, Economic and Territorial Information, encompassing the VCONFEST and IV CONFEGE, which took place in 2006. In 2016, the 3rd National Conference of Producers and Users of Statistical, Geographic and Environmental Information (INFOPLAN) was held from 5 to 9 December, with the general aim of structuring an inter-institutional agenda and actions aimed at meeting demands and building the National Official Information System, based on the engagement and participation of producers and users.

This year, the event is part of the "IBGE 90 Years Dialogues" project, which aims at celebrating the history of almost nine decades of the institution's work, as well as at developing guidelines for a new IBGE
