About the event

Data production through statistical surveys became, in the previous century, the main source of knowledge on the several social, cultural and economic contexts around the world. Such a production has been facing new challenges throughout the 21st century. In information society, there is an increasing need for data in order to meet the demands of a constantly changing reality which moves at a relentless speed, whereas, paradoxically, it becomes more and more difficult to collect data by means of surveys.

Technological innovation and cultural transformations challenge as well as provide institutes of statistics and geosciences with the opportunity to meet timely and qualitatively - as these entities come up with new approaches for obtaining data - the necessities of a global world, where enterprises and respondents in general have less and less availability to offer information to data producing bodies.

Therefore, the main institutes of statistics and geosciences around the world have been implementing new strategies for obtaining data in order to improve information quality. Such strategies comprise combination of data sources, the increasing use of administrative data, combination of collection methods, intensive use of technological resources applied to data collection, among others. As a result, the methods for obtaining data have enhanced, whereas the respondent burden have reduced.

In the light of such issues, SMI 2014 brings as its main theme “Challenges and opportunities in obtaining data”, on the grounds of Survey Methodology, which is vital to guarantee the quality of the results, given the diversity of methods for their obtainment.

Objectives:

  • To provide space and opportunities to discuss and reflect on the advances, challenges and perspectives of the methodology required to obtain data from direct collection, administrative records and other sources;
  • To offer building capacity opportunities for participants who are interested in relevant and current methods and solutions to deal with issues related to obtaining and collecting data.

Format:
The program comprises:

  • Plenary conferences;
  • Parallel conferences;
  • Thematic sessions;
  • Oral presentation sessions;
  • Poster presentation sessions.

National and international speakers of renowned competence on the theme will take part in the event.

The official language of the event is Portuguese. Nevertheless, some conferences will be presented in English. Some sessions of the event will have simultaneous interpretation from English to Portuguese.

Paper submissions for oral and poster presentations are open. A Scientific Steering Committee will evaluate the submissions.

Target Audience
SMI gathers technicians and researchers from IBGE, from public and private organizations, representatives of national statistical systems of surrounding countries, representatives of national, state and municipal entities of statistics and geosciences and members of the national and international academic community interested in the themes addressed.
